Christine > Day 353: Hot Cocoa
December 19, 2009
A mug full of cocoa to go with the cookie I posted on Thursday. It actually serves two purposes. First, Ken and I are bundled up in the house just waiting for the snow to accumulate (we're expecting a massive blizzard at any moment, so far we've got just regular snow). This is our first snow of the season and I thought it fitting to enjoy a hot mug of hot chocolate. The second purpose is of a celebratory nature (since it's too early for a cocktail lol). I got a call yesterday at work from my mother informing me that my older brother is coming home from the nursing home this weekend. He's 43 and has been there for almost 2 years for various reasons (broken back, his colon kept exploding for unknown reasons so he needed a colostomy bag, then he suffered repeated bouts of c-diff-- among other things). I was so overwhelmed I sat at me desk and cried. He has suffered from a rare autoimmune disease for most of his life. Diagnosed with uveitis in the 3rd grade, he has never had a normal life and spent much of his life between 3rd grade and college being a guinea pig at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. Due to high doses of steroids (prednisone and cortisone) he has consumed since 3rd grade, his body is falling apart, hence the broken back, knee replacements, exploding colon etc. I'm so happy he is finally coming home. The wife of the man that shared a room with him in the nursing home told my mom she saw him deteriorate over the last year and noticed him crying alone in his bed from time to time. He always put on a brave and cheerful face for us when we visited but news of his alleged tears came as no surprise. This Christmas what I'm most grateful for is my brother and his long anticipated homecoming. I'm not an overly religious person but I would love to get as many prayers for my brother Mike so he has an easy transition and a very healthy year.
