Day 71: Piling
March 12, 2009
It's almost spring here on Long Island- at least it looked that way today. I made three pit stops on my way home from work today and took a bunch of potential "photos of the day". I let the hubs pick out his favorite. I took quite a few that made me very happy which is unusual. I guess that's a sign that things are brigtening up since changing the clocks last week. Yay! Day 86: Tap
I'm 41 and I am currently enrolled in an "Adult" Tap class. Several of my co-workers and I take weekly lessons every Friday night with a goal of performing in a recital in June. Personally, i could do without the recital part but the class is fun and it's a little bit of exercise. There's a wide range of ages in our group. Melissa (also known as "Mini Me" because she's 4'10") is 24, Patty, Marian, and Joanne are in their early 50's and as I mentioned I'm 41. We dance to "Chattanooga Choo Choo" but really we're just a train wreck. There are a few women older than anyone in our group- two look like they're in their 70's and they just can't remember a lot of steps in succession. Me, I'm about as graceful as a bull in a china store and Patty falls. All the time- seriously, like EVERY class. And not a quick slip or loss of balance mind you. A cartoon-like fall where her feet just slip out from under her and her legs fly up in the air and she lands flat on her back. Every class. And she gets up every time and takes a bow. Some of my family are way too enthusiastic about going to the recital and I'm CERTAIN it's not because they love me or because they're interested in tap. It's all about the video recorder and You Tube. Good thing I have a sense of humor!

This is Frankie and she's a girl. I'm not usually a small dog lover but Frankie has stolen my heart. My husband has already had a lot of time with her and he refers to her as "his girlfriend". In fact, the first time he was going to visit our friend he said, "I"m off to see my girlfriend". My head snapped around so fast my head nearly popped off. He had a stupid grin on his face and told me his girlfriend is a pug. I was OK with that. :)

These were the eggs I cooked on Friday. An egg is just an egg and tastes just like an egg, but somehow when they're prepared over an open fire deep in the mountains, they just taste better. :)

Day 130: Baseball
May 10, 2009
Ken and I arrived on Long Island after 3pm and went straight to my younger brother's house to celebrate Mother's day with my mom and the nephews. Aidan was tossing a baseball onto a spring like net that bounced the ball back for him to practice catching. I took a shot of one of his baseballs just lying in the grass. Ken and I were happy to stop, not just because we wanted to wish my mom a happy day, but because we had another hour and a half to drive to get home so were were glad to get a break. We're both exhausted after a long journey. :)

PS- sorry for cramming three days worth of shots in one- I uploaded three photos tonight because I didn't have access to the internet during the last leg of my vacation.

Day 96: Baby Lambs
April 6, 2009
Right down the road from me is an organic farm that is home to several animals including a goat, a heiland cow, a black sheep (with a new baby) and a couple of lambs and their two babies, seen here. I've taken pictures here before (they're in my NoFo Gallery) but it was a very grey day and the shots didn't come out as well as I would have liked. Today is beautiful. These guys kept running away when I would approach them (even though I was on the opposite side of the fence). I was glad to get this shot of the one sticking his tongue out at me as the other cautiously watches. If you think that's fresh, you should have heard the loud noise the big lamb let out- not sure if he was "growling" at me or what it was but it sounded like the biggest burp I've ever heard.

Day 151: Dakota

My cousin Cathy recently lost her favorite dog Emma- she referred to her as her "soul mate". She was crushed by the loss. Meet Dakota, the newest addition to her family. A dachound like Emma. Adorable, right? The perfect thing to heal open wounds. Cathy drove up from Virginia and a bunch of us went to a "chick party" complete with a psychic. The psychic saw many things in my future- a move to the south east coast, possibly North Carolina in two years, two children, and she thinks I will make a lot of money if I go into children and pet photography here on Long Island. Oh, and when I asked her when I'll be getting a wide angle lens, she said she saw it coming to me in the next 3 weeks. Sounds impossible to me but I'll keep my fingers crossed lol.

Day 53: French Toast
February 22, 2009
My cousin Amy and my mom came over last night for dinner and a movie. The hubs had nowhere to go so the poor guy was there too. He should have smelled the boobie trap. Plenty of food and even more wine - I made one of my favorites: Pasta Bolognese. I should mention that my mother is an old school Republican and Amy is a staunch Liberal while Ken and I are somewhat Independent and usually vote for whoever is closest to the center rather than by party. A few comments about Obama and George W. caused the upset of the decade with mom flying off the handle. Whoever said alcohol and politics don't mix is a genius. Amy got to go home after the movie but Mom stayed the night. I made some French Toast for breakfast and Ken, always the joker, told his mother in law that she was eating Freedom Toast- a nod to our former President. Two out of three of us agreed that it was all Ken's fault since he poured the wine (always the fall guy!) and now all is right with the world.

Day 124: The Biltmore in Ashville, NC
May 4, 2009
Today was a pretty nice day weather wise. Overcast but at least it didn't rain while we toured the outdoor gardens at the Biltmore Estates. So far our trip has been pretty rainy. James Hill recommended a beautiful spot to drive from Greensborough to Asheville but it was overcast and rainy the entire day we traveled and since time did not allow for a leisurely drive anyway, we opted to skip it, much to our disappointment. Our friends, the owner of yesterday's dog of the day, confirmed that it would be a gorgeous drive. We plan on visiting them again next year and hopefully we will get to make that trip. So far we're having a fun time on our trip, as is Flat Andy. He met several new people today, drove a motorcycle, visited the Biltmore Estates, and hung out with a guy named "Round Randy". It was a hoot. I put the new photos in the Flat Andy gallery for anyone interested. :)

Day 91: Tulip
April 1, 2009
Yet another dinner sponsored by a pharmaceutical company. This time it was at the Jamesport Manor which is gorgeous. It's another old victorian mansion that was converted into a high end restaurant. It's especially beautiful in the summer when the flowers are in bloom as the lawn is nicely manicured and there is a garden in the front along with a few benches and some wine barrels converted into flower planters. I saw a few daffodils and shot them but it was a gray day and by evening it was just plain drab. The shots were boring. Just before I walked away I noticed another pot with two or three tulips in it. I focused my macro lens on one of them and noticed a cute little green swirl and knew right away it had to be my photo of the day. I think this will be my last dinner out for awhile as the calorie count at the end of the day is through the roof lol. Why work so hard all week to blow it on one meal, right? But the short ribs over mashed turnips were delicious nonetheless. :)

Day 69: Red Truck

I don't know what it is about these old fashioned trucks but I can't get enough of them. This is the second one posted this year on the dailies- the first one was an old rusted out blue one. I'd like to come back and shoot this one either at sunrise or sunset so you might just see this one again. :) I took a several other shots of it and they can be found in my North Fork (NoFo) gallery.

Its cold here in NY so these flowers, delivered from a local florist, were a welcome sight today. This flower in particular made me smile. I have never seen this kind before. If anyone knows what it is, feel free to comment. Also, I liked the "brighness" of the pic- this is sraight off my D300. Would it be technically considered over-exposed? :)

I found these swans near the same spot I found the ducks the day before. I pulled my car over to get a few shots and got a few really sweet shots. This isn't the best of them, but for some reason he way mama is looking at her "Ugly Duckling" just struck me. I love her expression and how she's looking back saying "This is how we do it." There are a few other shots in my alternate gallery.

Day 85: Jeddadiah Hawkins

My second attempt at PS. I like the sky towards the top of the photo but I have yet to learn how to get it to show up between the tiny tree branches lol. Ken said they looked like they have frost on them lol. This is one of the most beautiful restaurants on the North Fork of Long Island and it has the price tag to prove it. It's actually an Inn as well- there are 4 bedrooms on the 2nd floor and a large loft- like apartment on the third. Each of the 5 rooms were designed by a different interior decorator. All of them are stunning in their own very unique way. The Matre d' (did I spell that correctly?) took myself and two co-workers for a tour of the rooms since no one was slated to stay for the night. Revonda, a very hysterical co-worker, got overly excited about the room aptly named "Cocoa". While our tour guide was trying to maintain a professional composure, Rev was carrying on about eating Cocoa Crispies in the Cocoa room on Yo MTV Cribs. Hysterical. Our tour guide would just shake his head, smile and say, "Not a problem at all". For anyone interested- Revondas adorable daughter was my first portrait during week one of my Photo a Day Project. She's got as much life in her as her mother lol. She's going to be a terror!

Day 220: Moishe - the sweet little kitten that broke my heart

I didn't take this photo today, but for reasons I will explain I absolutely had to make this my photo of the day. This is Moishe (pronounced MOY-sha). He's about 10-12 weeks old and he is adorable. He stole my heart a couple of weeks ago and my husband and I agreed to adopt him but were unable to take him home at the time (since he was abandoned by his mother, we wanted to make sure he had a clean bill of health before exposing O'Puss and Kramer to him). My best friend had been nursing him for almost 8 weeks. He started out as "clumsy" back then. He'd fall over a lot and would have uncontrollable head movements not unlike a human with Parkinson's disease. I was well informed that he would have special needs but the vet my friend took him to said he was otherwise healthy and not contageous or in pain. I suspect that since I was so attached to him, I heard only what I wanted to hear and filtered out the bad. Bottom line: my friend, the mother of 4 children, could not keep the cat and I was unwilling to let her husband take it to a shelter. After great anticipation I picked him up last night and after a long car ride home discovered he was worse than I wanted to believe. He was not in any pain but had such terrible nerve damage that he had a very difficult time getting around. I was so concerned with the quality of his life- it was extremely painful to watch him even though I knew he wasn't hurting. It was like he had a terrible case of cerebral palsy. I spoke to his original vet's doctor but got a bad vibe immediately with regards to their competence and compassion. I asked them if it would be appropriate to put the cat down but they played dumb a bit and weren't much help. I had a very long and mostly sleepless night. Moishe slept on my belly and was the sweetest little thing I've ever seen. What a wonderful disposition- so affectionate and loving I couldn't help but fall in love. This morning I had to make one of the hardest decisions I've had to make in a very long time and I took him to my regular vet who confirmed what I had suspected: his quality of life is poor regardless of the lack of pain. Much to my disappointment and yet relief, they said that putting him down would absolutely be the best thing for him and they offered that without any hesitation. Every staff member that saw him teared up- not only because he was that cute but because it was that painful to watch him try to move. Moishe was buried in my back yard and I spent the rest of the day crying and sleeping. I thank God for my wonderful husband for helping me through this despite his protesting the adoption. He predicted it would come to this. I have no regrets however and think things happen for a reason. Had I not taken Moishe home, he would still be suffering and a decision would never have been made. I'm extremely heartbroken but have comfort in knowing he is with my other late pets. I will miss his sweet little face. Sorry for the long post, I just had to let it out.

I find myself ahead in my photo a day (I have been taking the POD the day prior to posting- it's less pressure this way) and behind in my commenting. I tried to comment last night but Smugmug was down. It's off to work but I will catch up tonight. I went to Martha Clara Vineyard and Farm to shoot the farm animals and was surprised to see a display of these beautiful old sports cars. There were over 20 of them- I created a gallery under "things" if anyone is interested in cars. I'm not usually, but I did fancy these little guys.

Day 19: Snow Covered Train Tracks with a Side of Discouragement

I had kind of a crummy day at work and took a drive during my lunch break. I snapped this photo before running back to the office. It's very plain but I had high hopes that I would learn a skill in Photoshop and jazz it up. Maybe paint a bright blue sky or use some sort of color pencil to colorize the trees. How hard can that be? The program was just delivered to me a few days ago and I have not used it yet. I have no idea how to get around in the program let alone do any color painting. I'm usually very computer savvy and figured PS would be a snap for me since most programs are. I was unable to do anything with the photo other than make it "sort of" sepia. There are probably hundreds of thousands of people that use PS, right? Please tell me it won't be impossible to learn- someone, anyone?? When I ordered it through Amazon.com, the seller went out of his way and e-mailed me to warn about how complicated it is. I was sort of insulted and replied that complicated is my middle name. A little cockey, right? After a few hours with PS I feel like I should change it to simple lol. Any encouragement?? I just purchased a how-to book by Scott Kelby upon someone's recommendation. I'm hoping I can devote some time this weekend to learning a few skills.

Photo a Day Project 2009 :
A Photo a Day (also known as Project 365) - What is it?? It's exactly what the name implies - a photo is posted each and every day for a full year. You can choose to impose whatever rules or criteria you wish- some photographers insist that the photo be taken the same day it's posted, others will post an older photo that they "Photoshop" the day they post it, and still others don't impose any rules at all. My goal for this project is to take several photos every day and choose the best from that day to post. I have been able to stick to it for the most part (with one or two exceptions so far). I carry my Nikon D300 wherever I go- it's now like one of my limbs. It's one of the most challenging things I've ever committed to doing but so far it's been well worth it. If you've got a minute to spare, go ahead and hit the slideshow button. And don't be shy about giving a photo a “thumbs up” or even commenting if you see something you like. :D

Lastly, for those visitors that aren't members of Smugmug, the photos posted to this gallery are critiqued by photographers that belong to the "Daily Community". If you click on the "DailyPhotos" link above (it's next to my name), you will be taken to a gallery with photos posted by other the members. There's a lot of beautiful work out there.... you can get lost for hours.

My Cats: O'Puss & Kramer : O'Puss and Kramer are litter mates born in the spring of 1997. I never really cared much for cats having only owned a dog in my childhood with little exposure to felines. These guys were born in my mom's back yard under a bush by a stray cat being cared for by a neighbor. After repeated prompting by my mother during a visit back in '97, I reluctantly went in the back yard to check them out. At first glance of that little smudge on O'Puss' nose I was instantly in love and was the owner of two kittens. The rest, as they say, is history.

About Me : Welcome!
I am a photographer based on New York's Long Island specializing in candid photography. Although the studio setting and the lighting that accompanies it can produce beautiful photographs, I much prefer the photojournalistic approach capturing people and pets in their natural environment rather than formal posed shots. I enjoy working outdoors and am obsessive about using available natural light. For me it's all about capturing personality and emotion and it doesn't matter if it's a special occasion or just a normal, regular day.

I do use Photoshop to fine tune or tweak a photo and until recently that used to be all I used it for. I considered myself a “purist” for the longest time. In a way I still am- for the most part I think post processing should be used to bring out the goodness that should already be inherent in a good captured image. That being said, the more I work with the program, the more interesting effects I am now able to create. I enjoy completely changing the style, look and “feel” or "mood" of an image (creating a “retro” or antique look, for example). I am now
excited about using the program to achieve the desired effects for my clients.

I work on location (at your house, the park, the beach) and prefer not to use backdrops, props, or staged
or posed shots. I love candids and like to capture people and pets doing what they do naturally, all the while capturing their personality. Two of my favorite subjects are my nephews, Aidan and Collin, who say I'm “obsessed with my camera”. They couldn't be more right.

Dead Bunker : May 18, 2009. On my way home from work, I noticed the water near a parking area looked lumpy, almost like it was iced over white caps. When I got out of the car the smell almost overcame me. I went over to the dock with my camera this is what I saw. People were driving up and getting out of their cars to see for themselves- apparently the word got out and spread across town while I was in the office. I asked one of the locals why all the fish were dead and he explained that they're "Bunker" and the Bluefish like to eat them. They corral the Bunker into dead end creeks and estuaries so they're trapped and they can feast for hours, depleting the area of oxygen until all the Bunkers suffocate. Apparently no one eats Bunker but I was disturbed and upset by this nonetheless. It was so sad seeing all of those dead fish. I'm actually glad they were killed by Bluefish. At first I thought it was the pollutants that killed them off.

UPDATE: The fish have been cleaned up and one of the guys in the clean-up crew said the fish were THREE FEET DEEP!!! Can you believe it??

Girls at the Beach : Finally.... a day I didn't work until 7pm! I picked up a pizza at Lenny's for my husband and I and as soon as I finished eating, I put on my shorts and flip flops, got into my Jeep and drove off to find my photo of the day. I was at a local park/beach when three cute girls stopped by to swing on the swings. I asked if they would mind me photographing them on the swings so I could get some practice shooting motion and they were happy to do so. Here's my dilemma: I had three cute "models" but since I didn't know them or their families, I couldn't make any of the shots of any of the girls my photo of the day since I was worried some of the parents wouldn't appreciate it. I gave each girl my business card and told them I would make a private gallery for them and that I would password protect it so their parents didn't have to be too concerned.
