A Photo a Day (also known as Project 365) - What is it?? It's exactly what the name implies - a photo is posted each and every day for a full year. You can choose to impose whatever rules or criteria you wish- some photographers insist that the photo be taken the same day it's posted, others will post an older photo that they "Photoshop" the day they post it, and still others don't impose any rules at all. My goal for this project is to take several photos every day and choose the best from that day to post. I have been able to stick to it for the most part (with one or two exceptions so far). I carry my Nikon D300 wherever I go- it's now like one of my limbs. It's one of the most challenging things I've ever committed to doing but so far it's been well worth it. If you've got a minute to spare, go ahead and hit the slideshow button. And don't be shy about giving a photo a “thumbs up” or even commenting if you see something you like. :D

Lastly, for those visitors that aren't members of Smugmug, the photos posted to this gallery are critiqued by photographers that belong to the "Daily Community". If you click on the "DailyPhotos" link above (it's next to my name), you will be taken to a gallery with photos posted by other the members. There's a lot of beautiful work out there.... you can get lost for hours.

Christine > Day 26: Long Island Sunset
January 26, 2009
SOOC- no photoshopping to enhance color. I was driving home from work and couldn't keep my eyes off this gorgeous sunset. Once I reached Hampton Bays I turned down a dirt road that took me to the beach. I couldn't resist. I must say, it's very nice to get out of work when there is still some light. We're getting close to spring. Yay!
Christine > Day 27: Birthday Flowers
January 27, 2009
Yesterday was my birthday. The two Oncologists I work for have a bouquet of flowers delivered to each employee on their birthday (which is very nice). Mine was delivered on time but to the Riverhead office and I was in Southampton so I picked them up today. It's not a great birthday, mind you. Last year I reached a milestone so it took the sting out of turning 40. This year I'm just plain old 41, also known as "over 40". The good news is that today is day 27 in my "Photo a Day" project. That leaves only 338 days left, but I'm not counting, I promise! So far I've been enjoying the journey, even on the days I can't find anything to shoot except my cats (who by the way are sooo sick of the camera). Some days are definitely duds but just when I think about throwing in the towel, I snap a photo that I'm happy with and proud of (like yesterday's sunset). I've learned a thing or two during this month so I am excited to see how much I will have imnproved come my 42nd birthday. Hopefully the "before" and "afters" will have great distance between them. I'm so glad I started and I thank everyone for their kind words of encouragment. :)
Christine > Day 28, 2009 Work
It was not too cold today but it snowed pretty heavily from early morning until about 11 am when it started raining. I grabbed my camera bag on my lunch break to see if there was anything I could shoot and I wimped out and went back to the office. I was just messing around with DOF, nothing too exciting, but it's today's post just the same. I used my Nikon 28-105 macro lens, probably my absolute favorite lens. :)
Christine > Day 29: Jamesport Manor Inn
January 29, 2009
I and several of my co-workers attended a lecture on Multiple Myeloma which was hosted by one of the pharmaceutical companies that supply us with chemotherapy agents. It was held at one of my favorite restaurants on the North Fork: the Jamesport Manor Inn. It's an old Victorian styled home/mansion that was "fixed up" (that's an understatement). A few million dollars later, it's probably the most beautiful restaurant I've ever eaten in. There are dark stained hardwood floors, beautiful colors and textures throughout. This chandellier caught my eye- it's beautifully rustic and created nice patterns on the wall. It's actually huge- the photo doesn't do it justice. If I had a few million, I'd build a home around it. :)
Christine > Day 30: A Pair of Pears
January 30, 2009
I'm a little behind in my posting. These lovely pears have become a staple in my diet since they have been so deliciously sweet lately. It helps fill me up when I go through the hunger phases of my "diet". I hate that word. But I do love pears. :)
Christine > Day 31: O'Puss' smudged nose
January 31, 2009
I guess it's not nice to have a favorite but I can't resist O'Puss' nose with the cute little smudge on it. I used to dislike cats (having grown up with a dog). About 10 years ago I was visiting my mother a week or two after a stray cat gave birth to a litter of 3 kittens. She encouraged me to go see them sleeping under a bush. I had no interest. She suggested it again and again and again until I went outside and started making the typical "psss psss psss" noise with the hopes of waking them and getting them to come out from under the bush. This guy was the first and only one out. He ran right over to me while making that adorable baby kitten high pitched sound (MEW! MEW!). "Shoot!" I said to myself. Now I'm a cat owner. That little Charlie Chaplin smudge of a mustache was too cute not to take home. Kramer, my black cat, wouldn't come out from the bush and instead stayed snuggled next to his mother. I reached in for him and fell instantly in love. True to nature- Kramer is still the one who snuggles close to me while O'Puss is the more adventurous. These two forced me to change from cat disliker to cat lover with the potential of being one of those crazy cat ladies with 50 cats. My husband is the one that talks me down when I talk about adopting another kitten. :) As are 99% of my photos, this one is SOOC with the exception of a slight crop.
Christine > Day 32: 1700s Windmill
My husband Ken and I are going to a Superbowl party. I had to go out to the grocery store for a few ingredients for some deviled eggs and, as usual, took my D300. There's always something to photograph on the North Fork of LI on a bright day. This is the top of a "windmill"- Ken thinks it's from the 1700s.
Christine > Day 33: Deviled Eggs
February 2, 2009
Here is the product of my grocery shopping from yesterday for the Super Bowl party: Cajun Deviled Eggs. :)
Christine > Day 34: Snow again.
February 3, 2009
It snowed the entire day here on Long Island. I hate cleaning off my car in the cold! Later that evening, I experimented with night photography using the bulb setting. It's the very next photo in my gallery.
