DailyPhotos > Christine  > Smugmug Galleries > Photo a Day (Project 365) > Photo a Day Project 2009

A Photo a Day (also known as Project 365) - What is it?? It's exactly what the name implies - a photo is posted each and every day for a full year. You can choose to impose whatever rules or criteria you wish- some photographers insist that the photo be taken the same day it's posted, others will post an older photo that they "Photoshop" the day they post it, and still others don't impose any rules at all. My goal for this project is to take several photos every day and choose the best from that day to post. I have been able to stick to it for the most part (with one or two exceptions so far). I carry my Nikon D300 wherever I go- it's now like one of my limbs. It's one of the most challenging things I've ever committed to doing but so far it's been well worth it. If you've got a minute to spare, go ahead and hit the slideshow button. And don't be shy about giving a photo a “thumbs up” or even commenting if you see something you like. :D

Lastly, for those visitors that aren't members of Smugmug, the photos posted to this gallery are critiqued by photographers that belong to the "Daily Community". If you click on the "DailyPhotos" link above (it's next to my name), you will be taken to a gallery with photos posted by other the members. There's a lot of beautiful work out there.... you can get lost for hours.

Christine > Day 123: Shadow
May 3, 2009
Our first stop on the road trip was at the home of an old friend of Ken's, John and his wife Wendi. I have only met them once before about 2 years ago and instantly loved them. They have three beautiful dogs: Shadow (pictured here), Gus and Rosa. I really wanted to post a picture of Gus because of his incredible story: John & Wendi own a mountain home in another state which I will not mention for reasons that will soon be apparent. They noticed an emaciated dog wandering around the area and upon a little investigation found a home that had more than one dog that was obviously starved. Used for hunting, the brilliant owners thought by keeping them hungry the hounds would be better hunters. A few of the neighbors had spoken to the owner about the conditions but he just brushed them off. Wendi basically kidnapped as many as she could and kept Gus. The others she found good homes for. Looking at Gus you'd never know he was abused and neglected. Being adopted by John and Wendi is the human equivalent to winning $40 million in the state lottery. These dogs are so incredibly loved and it's obvious when you see them all together. So as much as I wanted to post a photo of my new friend Gus, Shadow stole my heart and this photo just melted my heart. If I didn't like John & Wendi so much, I would have taken all three dogs home. :) Once I finish fine-tuning all the photos of these dogs, I will create a gallery so you can meet gus and Rosa.

PS- In light of littlebro's question - all of the neighbors had previously confronted the dog owner who shrugged them off. The authorities were called and they paid the owner a visit but said there was nothing they could do without having "seen" anything happen. I have found that some states don't have strict enough laws and penaltys with regards to animals. Pretty awful if you ask me.
Christine > Day 124: The Biltmore in Ashville, NC
May 4, 2009
Today was a pretty nice day weather wise. Overcast but at least it didn't rain while we toured the outdoor gardens at the Biltmore Estates. So far our trip has been pretty rainy. James Hill recommended a beautiful spot to drive from Greensborough to Asheville but it was overcast and rainy the entire day we traveled and since time did not allow for a leisurely drive anyway, we opted to skip it, much to our disappointment. Our friends, the owner of yesterday's dog of the day, confirmed that it would be a gorgeous drive. We plan on visiting them again next year and hopefully we will get to make that trip. So far we're having a fun time on our trip, as is Flat Andy. He met several new people today, drove a motorcycle, visited the Biltmore Estates, and hung out with a guy named "Round Randy". It was a hoot. I put the new photos in the Flat Andy gallery for anyone interested. :)
Christine > Day 125: Breakfast in Savannah
May 5, 2009
I'm a little off time wise- I took this photo on May 5th (don't even know what day of the week it was, or is for that matter lol). We headed down to Savannah from Asheville NC after our day at the Biltmore Mansion. We stayed the night in South Carolina in a questionable location (hey, it was cheap!). We left early that morning to drive through Savannah on our way to a friends house in Florida. We spent about 2 hours there before getting back on the road. I loved Savannah- it called to me. I could easily call it home even dispite my hatred of the extreme heat and humidity. We stopped at a local breakfast joint where I had a real southern breakfast of biscuits smothered in sausage gravy and then we took a short walk around town for a few photos. We'll be coming back on Thursday to spend the night and spend Friday in the city catching a tour and shooting the city that has stolen my heart.
Christine > Day 126: Fishing
May 6, 2009
One of the reasons Ken and I decided to travel down south for vacation was to visit a couple of friends. Our first stop was our two friends in North Carolina- you met their dog a few days ago. We arrived late last night to the home of his childhood friend who now lives in Florida. He's a retired NYC Housing Cop that moved to Florida many years ago, opened up a fish store and recently sold the store to his partner. He is an avid fisherman and fishes nearly every day. He mostly fishes for tarpin now- we jokinly call him the "Tarpin Whisperer" because he is so good at catching them. Ken caught his first (and up until this week his only) tarpin over 10 years ago and it was one of the great thrills of his life. This morning his friend Roy took him out on the boat at 5am and he caught another one. I love this picture of Ken (see Roy in the background). He has such a happy and serene look on his face- he's so happy to see his friend (they see each other once a year at best) and is thrilled about his fresh catch. I love the expression on his face here.

PS- I apologize for the spotty uploading of my photos. Each shot was taken on the date mentioned in the caption but I didn't have access to the internet every day on this vacation so I posted a bunch at a time.
Christine > Day 127: On the Road Again
May 7, 2009
We left Roy's house in Cape Coral, Florida at 8am this morning and spent about 9 hours on the road back to Savannah. I owe a HUGE thanks to the hubs for doing all of the driving. It's getting rough being cooped up in the Jeep Wrangler for long periods of time- it's not the most comfortable ride in the world and I tend to be a little bit antsy. I hate being restricted for a long time. The good news is we're going back to Savannah to spend a full day. I can't wait! I shot this photo of the windshield as we approached the Georgia border. I suddenly looked up and noticed a thousand dead bug splotches on the windshield and couldn't belive the number of them. The road ahead is appropriately blurred as this is how Ken and I feel right now. We're looking forward to a good Southern dinner and 8 hours of rest before a hopefully great day in Savannah.
Christine > Day 128: Savannah, day 2
May 8, 2009
I just got home from my 9 day trip down south. It's pretty late, too late to catch up with all of my photos for the photo a day but I had to work on at least one. I'll play catch up tomorrow. Ken and I swung around Savannah after seeing his friend Roy in Florida. I insisted we go back and he liked the city enough at first glance to not argue his way out of going back. He was glad we did. We took a 90 minute bus tour around the historic district then spent about 4 or 5 hours walking around. We must have walked over 7 miles. He was so glad we spent the day- I think we both fell a little bit in love with the city and for many reasons: the old world feel, the hip and at times artsy and whimsical vibe, the beautiful trees draped with Spanish moss, the gorgeous cobblestone streets, the beautiful squares or mini-parks, and the architecture. The churches were amazing- stunning actually, most of the streets had sections gated with wroght iron fences, and the windows, doorways and stairs were beautifully ornate- like nothing I've seen. This window is a perfect example. Most if not all of the windows and doorways were painted. I did see a lot of red which I love but for some reason this window with the arched top and the cocoa colored bricks and black iron gate really caught my eye.
Christine > Day 129: Virginia
May 9, 2009
Today is the second to last day of out trip. Tomorrow we head back to NY. We arrived at my cousin's house in Virginia in the late morning and will be spending the night with her and the day with her daughter, son-in-law and their two kids. This is Hunter and he is a ball of energy. This is my favorite age group to photograph because they are so enthusiastic about performing in front of the camera. Never self conscious, Hunter wanted to see each and every shot as soon as I took it. You would think he would have been exhausted from all the back and forth to check the screen on my Nikon. Not Hunter. Whatever my cousin Meg gives him for breakfast- I want some!
Christine > Day 130: Baseball
May 10, 2009
Ken and I arrived on Long Island after 3pm and went straight to my younger brother's house to celebrate Mother's day with my mom and the nephews. Aidan was tossing a baseball onto a spring like net that bounced the ball back for him to practice catching. I took a shot of one of his baseballs just lying in the grass. Ken and I were happy to stop, not just because we wanted to wish my mom a happy day, but because we had another hour and a half to drive to get home so were were glad to get a break. We're both exhausted after a long journey. :)

PS- sorry for cramming three days worth of shots in one- I uploaded three photos tonight because I didn't have access to the internet during the last leg of my vacation.
Christine > Day 131: Bayview Farm Stand
May 11, 2009
My favorite local farm stand is now open. Yay!! I took several pictures of the roosters outside the barn but for some reason I loved the perspective and colors of the Popeye statue outside in the parking lot. The rest I put into my alternate PAD gallery. Happy spring everyone! Asparagus for dinner.....
