DailyPhotos > Christine  > Smugmug Galleries > Photo a Day Project 2009

A Photo a Day (also known as Project 365) - What is it?? It's exactly what the name implies - a photo is posted each and every day for a full year. You can choose to impose whatever rules or criteria you wish- some photographers insist that the photo be taken the same day it's posted, others will post an older photo that they "Photoshop" the day they post it, and still others don't impose any rules at all. My goal for this project is to take several photos every day and choose the best from that day to post. I have been able to stick to it for the most part (with one or two exceptions so far). I carry my Nikon D300 wherever I go- it's now like one of my limbs. It's one of the most challenging things I've ever committed to doing but so far it's been well worth it. If you've got a minute to spare, go ahead and hit the slideshow button. And don't be shy about giving a photo a “thumbs up” or even commenting if you see something you like. :D

Lastly, for those visitors that aren't members of Smugmug, the photos posted to this gallery are critiqued by photographers that belong to the "Daily Community". If you click on the "DailyPhotos" link above (it's next to my name), you will be taken to a gallery with photos posted by other the members. There's a lot of beautiful work out there.... you can get lost for hours.

Christine > Day 352: Hot Cocoa
December 19, 2009
A mug full of cocoa to go with the cookie I posted on Thursday. It actually serves two purposes. First, Ken and I are bundled up in the house just waiting for the snow to accumulate (we're expecting a massive blizzard at any moment, so far we've got just regular snow). This is our first snow of the season and I thought it fitting to enjoy a hot mug of hot chocolate. The second purpose is of a celebratory nature (since it's too early for a cocktail lol). I got a call yesterday at work from my mother informing me that my older brother is coming home from the nursing home this weekend. He's 43 and has been there for almost 2 years for various reasons (broken back, his colon kept exploding for unknown reasons so he needed a colostomy bag, then he suffered repeated bouts of c-diff-- among other things). I was so overwhelmed I sat at me desk and cried. He has suffered from a rare autoimmune disease for most of his life. Diagnosed with uveitis in the 3rd grade, he has never had a normal life and spent much of his life between 3rd grade and college being a guinea pig at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. Due to high doses of steroids (prednisone and cortisone) he has consumed since 3rd grade, his body is falling apart, hence the broken back, knee replacements, exploding colon etc. I'm so happy he is finally coming home. The wife of the man that shared a room with him in the nursing home told my mom she saw him deteriorate over the last year and noticed him crying alone in his bed from time to time. He always put on a brave and cheerful face for us when we visited but news of his alleged tears came as no surprise. This Christmas what I'm most grateful for is my brother and his long anticipated homecoming. I'm not an overly religious person but I would love to get as many prayers for my brother Mike so he has an easy transition and a very healthy year.
Christine > Day 351: Dirt Road
December 18, 2009
There's just something about a winding dirt road that just draws me in..... I couldn't take the photo without my shadow ruining it so I just stood in front of a tree and stood sideways to blend in. It sorta worked, right?
Christine > Day 350: Christmas Cookie
December 17, 2009
My office is overflowing with chocolates and cookies. It happens every year during the holiday season. Hang on.... I have to unbutton my pants lol....
I put the other cookie shots in my alternate gallery.
Christine > Day 349: Cold Day at the Beach
December 16, 2009
I woke up a little early today and had time to stop for a photo on my way to work. Man, it was COLD!
Christine > Day 348: Why a Duck?
December 15, 2009
I posted this for my husband who loves the old Marx Brothers routine with "Why a Duck?". :)
Christine > Day 347: Christmas Balls!
December 14, 2009
I drive down the same back road every weekday morning on my way to work. I noticed last week the one of the houses was decorated with great big Christmas balls hanging from their tree. I finally pulled over to get a shot. It sure beats my lousey photoshopped self portrait from yesterday lol!! :)
I have more Christmas Ball reflection shots in my alternate gallery for anyone interested.
Christine > Day 346: Photoshop is HARD!!
December 13, 2009
This is a photo I took of myself while goofing around at work in the spring. I took it with a really old and pretty crappy point and shoot camera. The quality of the photo was so terrible (thanks to the low pixels and poor flash) it was embarrassing. For some reason I saved the file to my laptop (??). It rained most of today and I didn't get out to take a photo and didn't want another cat shot so while browsing through my files I found this and decided to try my hand at some serious Photoshop. A photo this bad would need it. In the original shot my lipstick was extremely faded so I "reapplied" it with the PS paint brush. I also tried to enhance my eye color - they're normally green but looked sort of brownish in the photo. When I tried to make them true green, it looked fake so I reverted back to the original color but enhanced the vibrancy. It's pretty awful all around- the shot, the lighting from the old point and shoot and my PS work but it is what it is. I don't normally like to post photos of myself (I'm a bit shy) but I figure it's time. I've been thinking about making my next year of POTD mostly indoor shots with flash lighting and a lot of self portraits so as to improve my indoor lighting skills. I also wanted to start the new year off with a new health regimen and would like to drop a dress size or two so I thought a bunch of self portraits would be a good motivator. It's kind of scary actually so I'll have to give it some more thought before committing to it. We'll see.....
Christine > Day 345: O'Puss, my muse
December 12, 2009
Is everyone sick of O'Puss yet? Good thing I'm not lol since I'm his "mother". I just counted and he's been my POTD almost 15 times since January 1st. I have two cats and love them equally but this guy just makes me want to get my camera out. There's just something about that smudge under his nose. :)
Christine > Day 344: Mirror in the Sky
December 11, 2009
Or should I say sky in the mirror. Another reflection today..... I couldn't help myself.
